What Is Session Beer and Why Should You Be Drinking It All Summer Long
One of the biggest complaints I hear about craft beer is the high ABV (alcohol by volume). Sure, it tastes great and gives you a wicked buzz when consumed en masse, but it just isn’t something you should drink all day on a sunny beach or river. Not only is it hard on the old liver, the associated headache isn’t worth the effort. So what can you drink when adult beverages and water sports are on the menu? This is where session beer is key.
Beer Advocate defines session beer as:, “Any beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV, featuring a balance between malt and hop characters (ingredients) and, typically, a clean finish – a combination of which creates a beer with high drinkability. The purpose of a session beer is to allow a beer drinker to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session, without overwhelming the senses or reaching inappropriate levels of intoxication.”
Sure, you could drink Bud Light all day in the sun, but you could also decide to forgo bathing all summer. I wouldn’t recommend either.
The Shop Downtown offers a choice selection of local and regional beers for your session needs, be it on the river, at the beach, or just relaxing on your porch. Our menu is constantly evolving, so drop by 121 East Pine in Downtown Hattiesburg and see what is on tap for your next session!
